Wide-open spaces in western Texas and New Mexico offer semi-arid scenery, generally with long distances between services.

On I-40 and I-25, shoulder widths vary and include rumble strips and road debris. Elevation increases at Clines Corners, then again east of Tijeras between the Manzano and Sandia mountains.

The route to Santa Fe broadly follows a pre-1937 alignment of Route 66 to the historic plaza. This option is longer but uses less interstate, offers outstanding views and has a more authentic Route 66 feel.

Expect traffic and further climbing through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to Santa Fe. The Turquoise Trail between Santa Fe and Tijeras provides fine open views.

Riding through Albuquerque is urban except on multi-use trail sections. To the west, the route crosses parts of Laguna and Acoma pueblos. The route to Grants follows historic Route 66.

Bicycle shops are almost nonexistent in the area.
