From St Augustine, the route is urban or suburban along most of the coast through Miami. SR A1A follows the ocean beside several aquatic reserves and wildlife refuges, with many opportunities to enjoy the beaches.

South of Jupiter, tent campsites are virtually nonexistent until south of Miami.

The highway to Key West has generous shoulders, but the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is recommended. North of Key West, Bahia Honda State Park offers opportunities to enjoy and explore the Keys' reef environment.

To make a loop from Key West, a ferry runs to Fort Myers, where you can join the Florida Connector and return to Fort Lauderdale. Ferry spaces are limited, so mention your bicycle when booking.
