There is plenty to do in the hinterland of Tampere, Orivesi and Kangasala, from hiking and skiing to cycling and boating. Hikers and the services they need are well catered for: the Kintulammi camping area opened in spring 2018, Kaarinanpolku was renovated in summer 2018 to make it even more adventurous, and the facilities in Pukala's recreation forest were also completely renovated.

In a good winter, there are plenty of ski trails from Kaup to Kangasa. In summer, the same routes are attractive for mountain biking. The best kayaking routes are in Näsijärvi's sheltered, fjord-like bays and on Kangasala's Vesijärvi.

Pukala and its small northern lakes offer the area's wildest experiences. The Ylängö lakes lie at elevations of up to 169 metres, so they freeze early in winter to the delight of touring skaters.
