From Mackinaw City to Cross Village, the route follows two-lane county roads through farmland, then sand dunes along Lake Michigan. Lakeview Drive in Wilderness State Park has several public beach access points.

From the park campground, you can enjoy a sunset over Lake Michigan and a distant view of Mackinaw Bridge in the fading light.

From Cross Village to Traverse City, the route uses various state highways and local roads with heavy summer tourist traffic.

South of Traverse City, the rest of the Lower Peninsula is flat to gently rolling. The route mainly passes small farming towns on lightly trafficked, two-lane county roads.

Apart from the area around Grabill, the Indiana section is very rural with very light traffic. The route ends in Monroeville, Indiana, where you can head east or west on the Northern Tier Bicycle Route.
