Section 2 of the Western Express Route begins in Fallon, Nevada, and heads east on US Highway 50. A writer for Life magazine described it as the loneliest road in America.

You see occasional vehicles, but towns and services are widely spaced, sometimes a long day's ride apart. In most cases, there are no homes or ranches between service points.

The maps identify the longest stretches without services, including two sections of more than 80 miles. This section is considered very difficult because of the terrain, lack of water, extreme temperatures and long distances without supplies.

Carrying a water purifier is strongly advised for any water obtained outside towns. Nevada is extremely dry and offers no shade apart from three trees east of Fallon identified by the research team.

The section ends in Cedar City, Utah.

Adventure Cycling maps are created by cyclists, for cyclists, and rank among the best available for those seeking discovery and adventure.
