Topographic map of DuPont State Recreational Forest, North Carolina, published by National Geographic.
In the late 1990s, Friends of DuPont Forest, a volunteer service organisation, began acquiring land for the country's first state recreational forest. After years of land acquisition, the forest now has more than 80 miles of interconnected trails. Most are open to hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking; a few are reserved for hiking so walkers can enjoy a slower pace.
Each trail's difficulty and distance are shown directly on the map, without needing to consult a separate chart. The forest's many waterfalls are a major attraction, and a waterfall chart helps locate them and plan visits.
The reverse presents selected loop trails for all abilities, from beginner to expert. Each suggested loop includes an elevation profile showing ascents, descents, trail intersections and other waypoints, together with turn-by-turn directions and notes on interesting landmarks.
A complete UTM grid aids GPS navigation; the supplied description also states that the grid is available in English.
