Bicycle Route 66 does not always follow historic Route 66: diversions account for riding conditions.

The six maps in the collection are waterproof and designed to fit a handlebar bag's map window or a jersey pocket.

1. Chicago, Illinois, to St Louis, Missouri: 329 miles

The route begins in Grant Park in downtown Chicago, beside Lake Michigan. Trails and streets lead through the city and its suburbs.

Because of heavy traffic and safety concerns, it does not follow historic Route 66 out of the city. The ride across Illinois is on flat to rolling terrain that originally supported tallgrass prairie.
