Traffic is heavy and becomes even heavier in summer, so spring or autumn is recommended for this section: May, September and October are the suggested months. Strong winds in summer mainly blow from north to south.

Expect urban riding in Santa Barbara and nearby towns. US 101 between Santa Barbara and Ventura is closed to cyclists, so the route uses city streets and county roads, staying close to sea level.

Traffic increases near Ventura and Oxnard, then decreases until Los Angeles County. A cycle path crosses Emma Wood State Beach north of Ventura before joining SR 1 southeast of Port Hueneme.

South of the Ventura-Los Angeles county line, the route passes through Malibu on a four- and six-lane highway with wide shoulders. Traffic is heavier at weekends and in summer.

Through Los Angeles, the route follows beachfront cycling and walking paths, then city streets through eastern Palos Verdes.
