The Colorado Trail, South Topographic Map Guide was designed as the perfect travel companion for navigating the southern section of The Colorado Trail. Conceived in 1973 and completed in 1987, the trail runs 486 miles between Denver and Durango, passing through some of the state's most spectacular scenery. Beginning at its southern terminus outside Durango, the Colorado Trail climbs steeply into the San Juan Mountains, where it remains above 10,000 feet for nearly 150 miles, with only one steep descent to the Animas River near Silverton. The trail's highest point is in the San Juan Mountains at 13,271 feet. After leaving the San Juan Mountains, the trail briefly drops below 10,000 feet before climbing back into the Sawatch Range and connecting with the Colorado Trail North and the Collegiate Loop.
