This section crosses three states, each with slightly different riding conditions, although the roads are generally passable. Vermont and New Hampshire are mountainous by eastern standards, with elevations generally ranging from 500 to 2,000 feet.

With a few exceptions, Vermont's roads are well signed. East of Middlebury, Vermont, riders must tackle a steep gap, or mountain pass.

After reaching the White Mountains and entering Maine, elevations are generally below 500 feet, although the terrain remains quite rugged. Near the coast, the route follows narrow back roads. In places, however, it uses US 1, which carries very heavy recreational traffic.

The roads of Mount Desert Island also see heavy tourist traffic as you approach Bar Harbor during summer and the autumn foliage season.
