Madeira is one of Europe's most beautiful and popular hiking islands. It is particularly known for its mild, even year-round climate and wildlife-rich natural landscapes, from rugged coasts and cloud forests to steep mountains and volcanic peaks. Levada walks are familiar to hikers throughout Europe. These paths follow the island's lifelines and are particularly suitable for older walkers and families. There are also demanding mountain walks along the central main ridge around the highest peak, Pico de Ruivo. Routes destroyed in the 2010 fire have been almost entirely restored. Madeira also offers numerous exciting routes, including botanical gardens, basket-weaving villages and solitary ridge walks.

Kompass maps provide all the information outdoor enthusiasts need.

These highly detailed maps show the topography, hiking trails marked by difficulty, contour lines and vegetation types, together with comprehensive tourist information.

Symbols indicate campsites, youth hostels, mountain huts, selected remote hotels and inns, sports and recreational facilities, and a wide range of other points of interest.

The legend is multilingual.
