Section 3 of the Western Express Route runs from Cedar City, Utah, to Dolores, Colorado.

It crosses some of America's most spectacular scenery on paved roads, with access to many national parks, monuments and state parks. Allow extra time to explore parks off the route on foot or by bicycle.

This section is considered very difficult, particularly because of 6 to 14% gradients in Utah, lack of water, extreme temperatures and long distances without services. In most cases, there are no homes or ranches between service points.

Carrying a water purifier is strongly advised for water from Lake Powell and the reservoirs, streams or lakes near primitive campsites. Utah is extremely dry, and for much of the route rocks provide the only shelter.
