Along the Oregon coast, the route often uses US 101, a two-lane highway popular with tourists. Traffic is moderate to heavy in summer, on public holidays and at weekends. This is also logging country, so watch for logging trucks.

Many improvements have been made for cyclists on US 101. In places, shoulders have been widened and marked. Tunnels are well lit, and the Arch Cape tunnel has a flashing light that cyclists can activate to alert motorists to their presence.

Look for dedicated hiker/biker sites in national park campgrounds. Where the route leaves US 101, roads are generally more rugged and lack shoulders, but traffic tends to be light.

Some steep climbs cross coastal headlands, particularly between Cannon Beach and Manzanita. Traffic is heavier near and within Lincoln City, then thins on the gentle slopes around Newport and Waldport.

Many coastal towns welcome tourists, with views to enjoy along the shore.
