Conceived in 1973 and completed in 1987, the trail runs 486 miles between Denver and Durango, passing through some of the state's most spectacular scenery. Beginning at its southern terminus outside Durango, the Colorado Trail climbs steeply into the San Juan Mountains, where it remains above 10,000 feet for nearly 150 miles, with only one steep descent to the Animas River near Silverton. The trail's highest point is in the San Juan Mountains at 13,271 feet.
