The best of the Aude's outdoor tourist sites, namely Narbonnaise, Corbières, the upper Aude valley and the Pays de Sault.
Aude is a contrasting department with a 50 km stretch of coastline (Narbonne and surrounding areas) and high Pyrenean peaks (the Pays de Sault peaks at 2,348 m and has a downhill ski resort). Between the two, the Corbières were a vibrant center of Catharism in Europe. Its "citadels of vertigo" maintain the legend and attract tourists: Quéribus, Peyrepertuse, Thermes, Puivert, Aguilar, Puylaurens.
The Aude preserves the memory of this era through historical reenactments, museums, and cultural events that celebrate this unique heritage. Catharism, although briefly flourishing, left a lasting mark on the region's history and continues to inspire fascination and mystery.
