The Mälaren skating map is described as the most advanced map ever produced with skaters' needs at its heart. It was developed in close collaboration with Mårten Ajne, one of Sweden's most experienced and knowledgeable skaters, who authored, among other works, the reference book Stora boken om långfärdsskridsko and the Skrinnaren guide to Mälaren.

Mårten analysed more than fifty years of ice and weather data and combined it with the experience accumulated within Mälardalen's skating clubs. The result is presented as two maps at 1:50,000 covering the whole of Lake Mälaren.

More than 200 freezing areas are shown using 11 differently coloured zones according to the stage of freezing. Particular attention is also given to current locations and weak spots in the lake, known snags, shipping channels and outlets.

The map also includes recommended starting points, parking areas and suitable overland crossings.
